Walk in the Cambodian Jungle

Siem Reap is one of the hottest travel destinations right now – for those thinking of a visit (and you definitely should be!) we have a new “must do” tour that shows off how much more their is to the area than the temples. Offering a new and exclusive hike around Kulen Mountian, Indochine Explorations has renewed my faith in philanthropic travel and that the path left travelled is worth finding…

Living in Siem Reap full time, surrounded by ancient temples and cultural sights, we can mean becoming all too accustomed to awesome sights – those of us who reside here can be a hard group to wow. I recently had the pleasure of heading out on Indochine Exploration’s Kulen Mountain Forest Discovery Trail tour on an excursion that opened my eyes to the hidden beauty lying just outside the city.

This gorgeous forest walk took us through one if the pieces of jungle on Kulen Mountain, located about an hour-and-a-half drive from Siem Reap. Kulen Mountain, or Phnom Kulen, is a national park known for its beauty but many of the tours currently offered have you travelling with the pack. With a history of working with researchers who study the areas biodiversity, Indochine has developed a unique relationship with both the natural environment and the local communities — one that they share with the public through their limited tours.

Taking you through the lush jungle, this tour boasts the potential to spot a number of different species of wildlife — from birds, squirrels and bats to bugs and silvered langurs, a monkey recently discovered in the area.

While the wildlife spotting can’t be guaranteed what is sure to impress is the landscape of the walk, which takes you through stone formations, an above ground cave and, weather permitting, onto Mushroom Rock for one of the most stunning views around. In this forest, life pushes through at every opportunity; it is impossible to imagine, photograph or describe the shades of green that the plant life produces here.

The forest walk is about 5km and takes just over two hours to complete, with mostly flat, easy going terrain. It should be noted that for those with children or limited energy levels, there is a smaller, 3 km loop that can be made.

The walk ends with a delicious lunch that is held at the river — a fast flowing body of water that changes depth depending on the season.  For those who still have energy, Phnom Kulen also has a stunning waterfall, as well as a local pagoda that houses a well used fertility symbol that can be visited after the walk.

This best part about this expedition is that by taking this enchanting walk you are helping to preserve the natural beauty of Phnom Kulen. Indochine Explorations uses part of the proceeds of each trip to encourage the local communities to protect the forest from illegal logging. The company has seen success — with the villagers only an alternative to logging themselves they have taken up reporting other illegal loggers to the authorities.

We are so pleased to be able to offer this walk to our guests — a truly unique experience that enriches the local community. Get in touch with our tour consultants and have them add this must to your Siem Reap tour!

Cambodia Vespa Tours — A food tour of Siem Reap

Looking for a fun and easy way to try many of Cambodia’s local delights? One of Siem Reap’s newest ventures is looking to give guests a taste of life in Cambodia at night…

Recent start-up Cambodia Vespa Adventures is combining two Siem Reap staples that visitors are eager to experience — motorbike rides and adventurous eats.

Despite living in Siem Reap, I was shocked by how many new foods I got to test out. While I wouldn’t describe it as a foodie tour per say — much of what you taste is more ingredients than prepared meals — but it was a definite culinary adventure.

From bugs to fruit we sampled it all. While our Country Director Narla pointed at his childhood favourites and popped snails into his mouth by the handful, Anna and I listened as our guide explained the how to properly pull apart a water beetle to eat.

It was lovely to test out local fruits (yes, even durian!) while learning the proper names for some items that I already knew I loved.

The barbeque stall next to the Road 60 fun fair was by far my favourite stop of the tour. We sampled spicy stuffed frog, sweet and sour chicken wings and fresh fish — each as delicious as the next.

Our motto tour took a sweet turn with its final visit of the evening — a stop at Sombai‘s infused rice spirit shop. Rice wine is a tradition in Cambodia, a simple alcohol that is produced both in villages and distilleries. Siem Reap based Sombai has upgraded this bland and sometimes unpalatable local spirit by infusing it with flavour combinations that are sure to please just about anyone. In addition to getting to sample each of their delicious concoctions, owners Joëlle and Lionel set out a tempting platter of traditional rice and palm sugar-based treats to enjoy with our night cap.

Though I wasn’t sampling many of the foods for the very first time I still found the tour educational and above all, tasty. I must admit that riding around on a motto driven by a competent and safe driver was a first for me in my year-and-a-half in Siem Reap — a truly local way to experience the City of Wonder.

Microlight tour of Angkor

Just another day at the office for Anna, who headed into the air for a unique view of one of the Cambodia’s most popular sites. Click on the photo galleries below to enlarge and browse some of the awesome sights…

Travelers who come to tour Cambodia never miss visiting the ancient ruins of Angkor, stepping back in time as they head out on foot to explore these magnificent relics in their jungle settings.

Spread over a 40km square area, it is often hard to comprehend the enormity of this area and vastness of what was once the Khmer Empire. To grasp the true scale of the Angkor Park you can now step up your adventure and experience a bird’s eye view of the temple complex in real time.

The newly established Sky Venture offers visitors a once in a lifetime experience by showing off the beauty of Angkor from a microlight aircraft. Unlike a helicopter, this lightweight 1-to-2-seat fixed-wing aircraft is open air which makes the experience much more exciting and real as you soar through the air.

Recently I was lucky enough to try this out myself. Starting early morning with clear blue skies I met Eddie, the owner and pilot for Sky Venture, on an unassuming rural runway, microlight ready to fly.

Eddie first visited Cambodia in 2002 with an archaeological team from the University of Sydney.  He would fly students, hydrologists, anthropologists and archaeologists as part of a summer fieldwork project focusing on the causes of the collapse of the Khmer Empire. Eddie has also worked with National Geographic, television crews and academics, giving him a vast knowledge both archaeological and modern day, making him an exceptional guide.

The views from the microlight are simply breathtaking… Within seconds of flight you are hit by 360 degrees of horizon and greenery as you soar over the temples and the surrounding countryside. With the recent rains, the landscape we saw was peppered with flooded paddy fields, farmers hard at work on the land. The reflections and colours from up high are just otherworldly.

We passed one of Eddie’s favourite temples to photograph – Pre Rup, which with fewer trees blocking the view and less visitors during the day makes for great pictures. He also loves to fly over the lake which is great throughout April and  May while there are still locals out fishing, using nets and boating through the flooded villages.

For the best insight into the area I would recommend the 30-minute ride. Flights are very much dictated by the weather, as high winds and rain do not bode well for this sort of little adventure, but given a clear day, this will without doubt be one of the highlights of your trip. For me it was one of the most exhilarating and beautiful experiences in all of my travels.
