Amphai

Name: Amphay Soukan

Age: 38 years old

Family: Married with 3 kids.

When I finished high school, I continued to work at a hotel to share more experiences with visitors at the hotel and to improve my English, which was not so strong.

I do not have any certificate from university, only high school. The reason I chose to be a tour guide because in my country there are not so many factories or other industries — especially in Luang Prabang province. The main income of the province is from tourism and at tour companies they still need a tour guides. I think working with a good tour company is a good life because every year visitors are increasing here in Laos.

To be a tour guide is not easy for me — I have to learn a lot about Laos: history, geography, culture, religion and daily life of local people. Before picking up a client, I have to understand the itinerary of my guests and when they ask for some thing I have to understand their questions and how to assist them. That is the most challenging part of being a tour guide.

I love to show guests things that are the different like the daily life of local people and the unique culture of Laos. When the guests come to my country I recommend for them to try local food as we have so many different Lao foods.
