Thailand celebrates King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s birthday

The world’s longest serving monarch, Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej celebrated his 86th birthday today in style. Making a brief public appearance the King urged the country to support each other in the interest of unity.

Ongoing protests in Bangkok took a break to show respect for the King, who is immensely popular all across Thailand.

King Bhumibol took the throne after his brother was shot and killed in 1946. The youngest son of Prince Mahidol, the majority of his younger days were spent in Switzerland, where he lived with his mother, Mom Sangwan, and his older siblings Princess Galyani and Prince Ananda
Thailand’s King is often seen as the nation’s father — a monarch that relates to the people and has initiated about 4000-development projects ranging from education to agriculture.

He is known for his musical talents — he plays jazz clarinet and trumpet —  as well as his skilled painting. King Bhumibol is beloved by the the Thai people who showed up by the thousands to the town of Hua Hin, near the king’s Klai Kangwon palace, to catch a glimpse of the monarch.
