Ring My Bell Myanmar Style!

By: Andrea Ross

The other day, when we visited my Myanmar director’s house for dinner, I found my favorite clever invention so far this trip!  When we arrived the gate was locked:

The gate was locked 🙁

So Tin grabbed a certain color string and pulled it!

What??!

The string connected to a bell above up four stories and outside an open window.

Hmmm...

Four stories up DarLe knew we had arrived and sent her niece down to let us in and have us up for a delicious dinner!

Cool!

At the end of dinner we heard the bell ring and DarLe ran out and looked down to see who was there.  It was our driver, letting us know he was ready to go whenever we were.

It really works!

I know intercoms are the norm, but in a place where electricity isn’t the most reliable and technology isn’t getting the job done, a simple colored string and a bell saves a lot of yelling and/or running up and down stairs!
