Rough Guides recognizes Cambodia’s friendly faces

SAM_0288

Newest Journeys Within team member Miranda Minassian reflects on Cambodia being named World’s Friendliest Country…

There is a game that local kids play in Cambodia, one that never ceases to bring a smile to my face.

Whether you are peddling along on a bicycle or riding past cars in a tuk-tuk, youngsters from one end of the country to the other go out of their way to offer up the warmest of welcomes.

“Hello,” they call out to passers-by from doorsteps, roadsides and out the window of moving vehicles, their faces eager for a response.

And who wouldn’t return such a warm welcome?

To send the greeting back their way, or even better the Khmer equivalent of soo-uh suh-dei, assures giggles all round.

Then, as sure as the grin these welcomes puts on your own face, the cycle will start again with new round of hellos and the giddy anticipation of their return.

With an such an infectious — and let’s face it, adorable — welcome wagon at every turn it is easy to see how Cambodia was rated number one on Rough Guides recently released “World’s Friendliest Countries” list.

Chosen through an online poll and a favourite among staff, the top spot comes as no surprise to anyone who has gotten lost in the country side, popped a bicycle tire near Angkor or spent any time at the Journeys Within Boutique Hotel. Cambodians are by-and-large a welcoming and helpful bunch (even when they are unsure what the question is.)

In spite of – or perhaps because of – how recently tragedy touched Cambodia, the Khmer people seem ready to show the world that they are more than that fresh, violent history. It is impossible not to admire the unbreakable spirit and tenacity it takes to overcome such adversity, smiles intact.

Cambodians aren’t the only people in the Journeys Within region that are getting recognition for being a beaming bunch. Myanmar, Thailand and Laos all cracked the Rough Guides top six, making South East Asia one of the friendliest areas in the world.

As if the food, culture and history weren’t enough of a draw already, a large concentration of the world’s most welcoming people is just one more reason to pack your bags and head East with Journeys Within Tour Company.

Surprises, Halong Bay, and Celebrating Tet — Part 3

Operations Manager Anna Baldwin Heads to Vietnam for a Surprise Reunion…

For me, the Hanoi adventure wasn’t quite over. Returning to the Old Quarter, my immediate reaction was ‘’Where is everyone?!’’. The streets were now deserted due to the mass exodus of Hanoi residents who all take time during Tet to be at home and spend some much-needed time with their families.

After taking a walk around the lake, however, I soon found that is was the main base for Hanoi ‘s celebrations. Here they had already started things off with live music, and  the city’s residents were pouring in to get ready to see in the New Year at midnight.

I, however, had other plans. Having recently opened, The Tirant (the wonderful hotel where I was staying,) was hosting a small party on its rooftop, which offers fantastic views of the fireworks display over the Hoan Kiem Lake.  And who better to spend the Tet celebrations with than Tracy, Kevin and their beautiful little boys, who met me just before midnight to watch the fireworks.

After the party it was time to say goodbye as Tracy and her family went for a wander around the lake, after which they planned to visit their local pagoda. The fact that by then it would be pushing 2am had no influence on their plans. ‘’We will sleep in tomorrow’’ – she told me, and that’s exactly what I planned to do as well.

December Giving

Dear Journeys Within Guests,

Since December is the month of giving I decided to ask for a favor this month, then I realized that I hate asking for favors without giving something back, so here’s my idea…

Condé Nast Traveler’s December issue once again features me as a regional specialist (just to be clear, I know it features me, but I would be nothing without my amazing team, so I see and know that this is an honor for the entire company!). This is the fifth year in a row that we’ve been honored on this wonderful list and it makes a huge difference to our business as well as putting me in a network of other specialists who have the same passion and drive that we have here at Journeys Within. To celebrate being on it again this year and the amazing new Condé Nast Traveler website I am asking any past guests to go and either ‘like’ my profile or write a review. Since I like to get JWOC (Journeys Within Our Community) involved whenever I can, Journeys Within will donate $1 to JWOC for every like and $5 to JWOC for every review in the month of December. Just think, this money will go towards the JWOC Free Classes Holiday Events as well as helping with projects as we head into the New Year.

If you have the time please visit my Conde Nast page and write a review of your trip, or just ‘like’ my profile page and you’ll be helping me, Journeys Within and JWOC. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank you; we’re a small company and we don’t have a lot of advertising dollars so we depend on reviews from our past guests and referrals and this year has been amazing! So thank you for traveling with us and thank you also for passing our name along, we are honored!
All the best,
Andrea, Brandon and the Journeys Within Team… Read more »

Working for Journeys Within

By: April Cole – US Director of Operations and Tours
This weekend while reading Outside Magazine, their “50 Best Companies to Work For” article drew me in. The thing that kept running through my head was that Journeys Within should be on this list, but making this list in a magazine wasn’t why I was so drawn in. What drew me in was just the reminder that I love working for Journeys Within; but what makes a work place great isn’t just loving what you do, but also the environment in which you work.
Soooo – I started thinking about our US office. I started thinking about how now that it’s just Kate and I for the winter, our focus on emails and client phone calls and going over tour details has us totally focused on our computer screens and we have fallen into a bit of a “daily grind”. What can I do to bring the spark back to the office? At the beginning of the summer Andrea and I always have the most incredible time brainstorming and inspiring each other about things we can do with Journeys Within. Through that early summer inspiration the Active Philanthropy tour was born. I want more of that! It’s not that we need to focus less on the details and service which we provide for our tours – don’t get me wrong, we need to stay focused! What I’m saying is that we also need to re-incorporate more of the fun, inspirational atmosphere that makes Journeys Within a special place to work.
So here’s a taste of the things we’ll be starting in the US office:
Afternoon brainstorming walks: I think it will be great to get outside, away from the computer screens, in the fresh air, and just chat about what’s going on and what we’d like to see happen within the company. Yes, we live in the mountains – so maybe our afternoon walks will have to be afternoon snowshoe expeditions – heck – I said Outside Magazine inspired me!
US Office Community support project: Kate and I both support and promote not only Active Philanthropy, but also the Journeys Within Our Community Projects. Giving back is important to the two of us, and I want to have a project special for the two of us. After today’s brainstorming walk, Kate came up with a wonderful project, which I’m really excited to be a part of! I’ll go into that more in a separate post.
Inspiration board: We’re going to come back from our walk and put our inspiration on the board. It will be a mix of new tours, community support projects, things that made us happy for the day and that we’d like to see more of – just an overall reminder of things to do and things that make us happy.
Facebook Fun: We’re always getting great posts from our Southeast Asia team, but you don’t hear much from the US Office. Well, we’re going to start coming up with fun and creative ways to keep you all more informed about the behind the scenes activities, upcoming events and booking processes of Journeys Within.
Mix and Mingle: Kate and I will be going out a bit more, attending travel conferences, luncheons, etc, just keeping as up to date as possible on the travel world and sharing the word about JW Tour Company and JWOC.

So that’s just a few of the new and fun things going on in our US office. There are a few more business items that we’ll be implementing too, but no need to bore you with those details.

Like what you’ve read? Well, we are hiring!  We’re looking for a Booking Manager for our Cambodia office. You can read more about Journeys Within Job Opportunities here.

Touich Restaurant

By: Kathryn Rose

The other day was Nary’s birthday, so a few of us decided it was high time we tried the famed Touich Restaurant in Siem Reap.  Guests go there all the time and come back raving about how good the food was. Many people tell us it was the best meal they had while in Cambodia. Touich is consistently high on Trip Advisor, staying at #1 most of the time. Somehow none of us had eaten there, so with Kate here from the US office and Nary’s birthday, it was the perfect excuse.

The very non-desrcript entrance sign

We made a reservation earlier in the day, and since it is low season and we were doing a kind of early dinner, they were able to pick us up in their old jeep. It is definitely an old military jeep, and would not be comfortable for a long ride, but since it was only about 10 minutes away we were fine to jam in there. The restaurant is just outside of town, along the river and away from all the tourists. We pulled up to the outdoor restaurant and instantly liked it. The tables are all under a large bamboo roof with really pretty hanging lanterns for light. There is a fan above every table to keep you cool, and we really appreciated that on a hot night. I would suggest wearing lots of bug spray, because even though they lit a coil for us at the table, I came home with a few new bites.

The JW group in the small outdoor seating area

We ordered a lot of food for the 5 of us, starting with most of their appetizer menu. The banana flower salad and green mango salad were delicious, and everyone who tried them said the floured shrimp were amazing. (I do not eat fish, sorry!) Then came all of our main courses, which were huge. Khmer restaurants do not usually give such large portions, so this was a bit of a surprise when so much food arrived. I ordered the “chicken with spicy and lemongrass”, mostly because I loved the name. It was really good, and I would get it again if there weren’t so many other yummy sounding things on the menu. Other dishes on the table included a whole fish cooked in a salt crust, octopus with peppercorns, stir fried tofu and vegetables and a beef soup. My dish was delicious, and everyone else seemed to enjoy all of their food as well. There were only a few leftovers, because we all pretty much cleaned our plates.

The spicy and lemongrass chicken - not too spicy though
The pepper octopus

I already want to go back, and this place is certainly worth the hype. I don’t know if it is the best food I have had in Siem Reap, but I would put it in my top 5 without doubt.
