Top Ten Tips for travelling Southeast Asia

Here are some Journeys Within tips to making the most of your Southeast Asian holiday…

Top Ten Tips to make the most of your holiday

Orient yourself  — When you leave your hotel pick up a hotel card to give to a taxi or tuk-tuk driver for your return trip. It usually has the name of your hotel and directions to get there in the local language as well as in English.

Haggle with a smile — Remember to bargain, it is a way of life throughout Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar and can be fun! Smile and give haggling your best shot, keeping in that 25 cents may not be much to to you, but to a local it can cover the cost of a meal.

Trust your gut — Don’t believe everything you hear. Tuk-tuk and taxi drivers have been know to tell visitors that where they want to go is ‘closed’, has a bug infestation or bad reputation; they might be planning to take you to an outlet where they get commission. Tourist hot-spots are susceptible to scam, so a little skepticism (and maybe a quick Google search) can be a healthy thing.

Kindness of strangers — That being said, don’t assume everyone is trying to rip you off; most locals are honest and want you to enjoy their country. The Golden Rule applies everywhere — treat others the way you want to be treated.

Keep cool — Asian isn’t always as organized or logical as we would sometimes like — try hard no to lose your temper, or even raise your voice, it is counterproductive. Believe us, Andrea has tried! Hot tempers will embarrass the locals while calmer heads will always prevail.

Keep your eyes peeled — The most photographic moments are often the ones you don’t see coming. Have your camera with you and ready at all times. You never know when you will catch the elusive 5 guys or family of 7 on a single motorbike.

Be prepared … with wet wipes — Hand-sanitizer, bug-spray, toilet paper, feminine products (if applicable) – don’t leave the hotel without them. The more remote the location the less likely you will be able to find the essentials. Wet wipes are the key to handling dusty roads and long days touring.

Stay hydrated — Only drink bottled water and drink lots of it. You don’t want to wait until you are dying of thirst or suffering from headaches before replenishing the liquid lost during the hot tropical days.  Dry the bottle if it has been kept cool in a tub of water; who knows where that water came from!

Befriend a local — Don’t hesitate to ask questions, directions or for help. Locals are generally eager to lend a helping hand, much the same way you would be if you came across someone lost in your neighborhood. Plus, it is surprising how much can be communicated with body language!

Accepting Asia — Everyday life, sight and smells will be very different in Southeast Asia compared to home. Go with the flow – the unexpected makes the best stories when you get home!

And one important extra…

Walk slowly and nap often, the locals do!Read more »

Anna Bella Photography

Ever get tired of always having one person missing from your family holiday shots (someone’s got to take the photo right?)

AB1

Always having to ask a stranger to take that shot of you and your partner, or worse still, finding a willing helper and then taking back your camera only to find a blurred shot or one with heads missing? Or do you look through your holiday snaps and wish you had some really professional pictures of you or your kids in that memorable location that you could frame or send to the relatives?

We think we have the perfect solution in the form of long-time Siem Reap resident Anna Bella Betts. An accomplished photographer and contributor to such prestigious publications as ‘National Geographic’ and ‘Travel and Leisure’, Anna knows the temples of Angkor inside out and can add a wonderful new dimension to your time there. Her approach can be totally tailor-made to your requirements; either to shadow you and your guide, taking pictures all the while with a mostly ‘fly-on-the-wall’ style or with directed posed shots (think kids star jumping on a beach but with an Angkorian backdrop). Or a mixture of both – it’s up to you, but whatever approach you prefer the result will be a wonderful portfolio of professionally rendered memories.

Being so familiar with the area Anna Bella can also add valuable input to your itinerary, sharing with you the best viewpoints for photos or the best time of day to visit a certain spot. For those with an interest in photography themselves, she can also help you get the most out of your own images. Included in your package are between 50 – 150 high resolution images (depending on the length of the tour – half and full days are both offered), delivered in jpeg format to your hotel the following day on a USB flash drive.

A letter from Brandie Joy and family

Journeys Within were happy to accommodate when Brandie Joy chose us to help her plan a recent trip to Siem Reap for her lovely family. After returning home she shared this adorable family photo and her thoughts on their time away — a review too sweet not to share …

The staff at Journeys Within are amazing.

We were given a recommendation by a friend and I’m so glad I contacted them. Our trip to Siem Reap was booked at the last minute, a chance to escape the hustle of Kuala Lumpur for a long weekend.

I emailed Anna and she was able to accommodate us on such short notice on the days that we had available.  Our guide and driver were excellent and provided us a lot of information and answered all of our questions along the way.

Being able to get into an air conditioned van with water and wet towels was nice too, especially traveling with kids.

I will be telling all of our friends about Journeys Within for their upcoming trips and can’t wait to work with them again!

Special Occasion Restaurants: The Siem Reap Addition

Traveling is a great way to leave an unforgettable mark on any of life’s special occasions. As many of our guests celebrate special occasions while on tour with Journeys Within, we thought we would share some of the restaurants that can give any occasion the care and attention they deserve…

AHA

Serving up contemporary Cambodian food as well as some international fair, AHA offers the chicest atmosphere in downtown Siem Reap. With one of the best wine lists in town and its traditional fine-dining feel, this restaurant is a trendy choice for those who want to celebrate with style in an otherwise dressed-down town.

Insider tip: It is a popular spot in town so seating inside cane pretty cozy, but the staff are top notch and always willing to accommodate special events.

Cuisine Wat Damnak

Cuisine Wat Damnak was founded on the simple idea of using only local, fresh, and seasonal produce to create delicious contemporary Cambodian food. As such, the menu changes on a weekly basis with the chef carefully designing each set course meal. Located in a beautiful Khmer house just outside of town, this restaurant delivers atmosphere as well as excellent meal options and is considered Siem Reap’s finest overall restaurant.

Insider tip: The best seats are outside, weather willing.

Destination Dining with Beyond Unique Escapes

This is a private dinner in a traditional Kompheim village home located just outside Siem Reap. Surrounded by nothing but rice paddies and accompanied by traditional music, this romantic experience is a one-of-a-kind meal. A private chef and wait staff, drinks and nibbles, starter taster plate, main meal, trio of desserts, exotic fruit platter and all the evenings drinks all included.

Insider tip: A unique dining experience, food must be pre-selected from provided menus 2 days before.

Cycling in Kulen National Park

The Journeys Within team explores more of Siem Reap’s surrounding area with a bike trip through the Kulen Mountain range… DSC01219

I was recently reminded of how much of the beautiful Cambodian landscape I have yet to discover when I embarked on an ambitious bike tour earlier this week with Indochine Exploration.

Phnom Kulen is a stunning mountain range located about 30 km (or an hour and a half of country drive) north of Angkor Wat. Nick, Indochine’s Chief Exploration Officer, took five member of the Journeys Within team – Narla, Vanith, Santu, Sina and I – into Kulen National Park to test out one of their newly developed trips.

The gang hits the road.

Not an experienced mountain biker, I was a little nervous about how my legs and I would hold up on the unknown terrain. I was slightly comforted the enthusiasm of our guides — they were raring to get under way and into the forest.

The road was definitely rugged, I would say this trip is for those already comfortable on a mountain bike, but the scenery we enjoyed along the way was well worth the effort. The Kulen range is inhabited by small villages, but there is still dense forest scattered with pathways to make your way through. In addition to these stunning forest views, we were able to take in some relics deep in the forest — a larger than life elephant, a pair of lions and weathered rock formation Nick believed to be a frog. A hike off the beaten path (I gladly left my bike behind) these giant stone animal figures remain relatively off the radar and untouched.

Ancient carved rock elephant — little is written about this and the other relics at this site making them one of the less visited attractions near Siem Reap.

The hill at Kulen is thought to be sacred making it a popular destination with Cambodians on weekends and Khmer holidays. At the top of the mountain there is a temple with a stunning view of its surroundings. After a break to enjoy the animal carvings and a short hike back to our bikes the group continued on, up a rock-bed to this nearby pagoda. With the rocks reflecting the heat and the steepness of the trek, this was the most challenging portion of the ride, though thoroughly satisfying when the others and I made it to the top.

If bike riding isn’t your top choice, Indochine Exploration also offers hikes and kayak trips that showcase Cambodia’s beautiful natural environments. Beyond providing access to some of Cambodia’s most beautiful natural landscapes, the company is also focused on preserving them. Looking to create sustainable tourism that keeps conservation in mind, Indochine Explorations reinvests in the communities they visit and actively support local conservation efforts, an idea we here at Journeys Within can support.
