Film buffs rejoice, the third annual Angkor Wat International Film Festival is back in town!
For all those film lovers, there is finally an opportunity for an evening at the movies in Siem Reap.
Based out of the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort, the Angkor festival offers free screening of films from around the world with the theme of cultural and environmental preservation.
The festival was started by Dr. Tom Vendetti, a filmmaker and mental health professional who chronicled the journey of one of his patients as they returned to Cambodia after being forced to flee during the reign of the Khmer Rouge.
The experience with his patient, and the resulting film, put Vendetti in touch with Bernie Krisher, an American journalist heavily invested in Cambodia. Krisher encouraged Vendetti to start a film festival in Cambodia to share stories that affect communities both locally and internationally.
Free of charge, the festival present Cambodian and International films free to the local and visitors alike. With no other commercial theaters to watch movies in Siem Reap, it is the first opportunity to see a story told on the big screen for many.
A real treat is the young film maker’s showcase which features films made by local talent, taking place Sunday at 11 a.m.
Whether you live in Siem Reap, or are just visiting, the Angkor Wat International Film Festival might just be the perfect way to spend your weekend.
I’m so glad Angkor Wat International Film Festival is back and now on it 3rd year. Congratulations.
Agreed! It is great to have cultural events come to Siem Reap — a nice reminder it is not just about the temples!
