Speaking Khmer

Yesterday Brandon and I were working in the front room while one of our volunteers was doing a conversation class with one of our students. I was eavesdropping because the questions she was asking were interesting…”who is your hero?” “if you could meet anyone who would it be?”, etc. Each time the student answered I completely understood. “My hero the susses.” Oh, I thought, his hero is someone with success. It took the volunteer a little while and some spelling out of words to get to the same conclusion. After a few of these Brandon looked at me and winked, “it’s worrying that I understood his answers perfectly” he whispered. The truth is, he’s right, everyone always asks us if we speak Khmer, but that isn’t really the most valuable skill here, because most of our staff and students want to be speaking English, where we excel is we speak the Khmer version of English! All I know is, I hope this leads to susses.
