So you may have noticed that almost every post says “posted by aprilcole” – then you may have noticed that at in the body of the post there is a note saying “posted by Waew or Kristina or Jeab”… well,  you are very observant!

🙂

I just wanted to let you know that while we are starting out this blog I will be posting blogs for people, reading your comments (which I am very excited to do!) and forwarding on comments for specific JW staff members. Our entire staff is equally involved in writing their own blog posts and sharing their personal stories and pictures – I’m simply going to be the one entering their stories onto on the blog for them for now.

I just felt I had to share this with you because it’s kinda different and you might have been curious.… Read more »

Koh Samet Surprise

Samed Trip : 29-30  Mar’08

When I first heard about this trip from my friend Joel…I said NO thanks…because at that time I was at Rawai beach in the south of Thailand on vacation. But when I heard my friend P’Tang (Martin) was coming and all my salsa friends were going too, my decision changed. I think it’s not the place that is important but who we are going with!!

Koh Samed is not too far from Bangkok—just 3 hrs drive.  We took a van from Victory Monument (in front of Pong Lee building) and then took a ferry for about 35 minutes to get to Koh Samed…then we hopped on a small open-air bus just 10 minutes to get to our Bungalow. The room was fine but there was no toilet in the room…but the food was great!!! The services were more than fair for the price we paid, you could not find a place for so inexpensive with such high quality in the world!!!  Actually we did not expect to get such good service.

But I haven’t mentioned the most important thing—the BEACH was more beautiful than I thought…(as you can see the pictures).   We had a great time! It was fun playing volleyball on the beach, but my skin turned dark from the sun 🙁 …we are Thai we love to be white 🙂

I would go there again…

‘aroi mak mak’ means delicious!

One of the things I like most about living in Thailand…is eating!  We are very lucky here that there is a great variety of exotic fruit and vegetables that we can make into so many different dishes.  One of my favorites is Papaya Salad, which we call Somtum. Its basic ingredients are shredded papaya (obviously), green beans, tomatoes, sugar, fish sauce and lots and lots of chilies, which are then pounded together using a pestle and mortar.  Somtum is the most famous food from Isaan, which is the Northeastern part of Thailand, but I think that most Thai people have a special place for it in their hearts…and the spicier the better!

If you hear a Thai person say ‘aroi mak mak’ then it means delicious, and for a true taste of Thailand I would recommend that you try if yourself from the many inexpensive roadside food stalls that line the streets, especially in Bangkok.  I like Somtum so much I made it myself at home this weekend with rice noodles (called Somtum Sua), and as you can see from the photos you also get good exercise while mixing it together!  Enjoy!

It's all about a good altitude!

When I tell people that I fly from the US to Asia alone with two kids they look at me with a mix of awe, admiration and fear. I understand all of these emotions because I feel them about myself…I am in awe that I am dumb enough to consider such a feat, have admiration in my own ability to forget all past experiences and go into each trip with a positive attitude and fear, well fear for a lot of reasons, but mostly because I know the kind of person it takes to travel for 30 hours with two children under three and have everyone arrive in working order. It takes the patience of a saint, a creativity for new games and a calming demeanor to help distraught babies deal with absolute confinement. This is where the fear comes in, I am none of these things! We therefore have to assume that I get through the journey based on tyrannical control and mental domination – my husband is reading this and nodding, that sounds much more like me.
Other than total domination there are some tricks to traveling alone with kids:

  1. For the day before the trip do not spend time with your kids. Find a nanny, a babysitter, some random daycare, it doesn’t matter, just don’t be sick of them before you begin the journey.
  2. Get a good night’s sleep the night before. I have never tried this as I am always doing last minute packing, sending final emails and, on at least two occasions, moving house, but about half way through the flight I always wish I had slept more the night before.
  3. Eat a lot. Eat dinner the night you leave, eat again at the airport before getting on the plane and eat every meal offered on the plane. A tired AND hungry mommy is dangerous. (Insider tip: If they deliver the meal and you have a kid asleep on your lap, then ask the flight attendant to keep it warm for you and you can ask for it later once they have woken up.) Take snacks and put them where you can reach them. I have never hated my beautiful sleeping baby boy more than when there was a Snickers in my bag in the overhead compartment, but he was asleep on my lap!
  4. Be prepared. I have more carry-on luggage than most people check, but I know where everything is. When I first get on the place everything gets put in its spot – bottles in the seat pocket, blankies on the seats, a Snickers HIDDEN (you do not want this found by anyone other than you!), pacifiers in each pocket, kids snacks at your feet and bottles water next to each of you.
  5. Normal rules are out and plane rules are in:

      Kids Rules

  • 1. No yelling, ever!
  • 2. Have as many bottles of formula as you like, constipation is a welcome side effect.
  • 3. No getting up, the flight attendants will get you…what do you think the mystery meat they serve is?
  • 4. Just tell me if you are hungry, you can have as many snacks as you like.
  • 5. Only necessary trips to the bathroom. Using ‘I need to go potty’ as an excuse to get up is punishable with a diaper and you having to make like a crazy astronaut.
  • 6. Everyone takes turns on mommy’s knee, whining for your turn will forfeit it.
  • 7. You can watch the movie. (Callie thought Juno was “Great”.)

Mommy’s Rules

  • 1. No books allowed. If you start to read a book and a kid wakes up you will hate them…no book, no hate.
  • 2. No headphones for the movies. If you can’t sleep you may watch the movie, but you may not listen. This way you are less invested and less likely to physically harm whichever child wakes up in the middle of said movie.

6. Take advantage of layovers. Let the kids run and have a ball and some blocks packed, fetch is great…you sit, they chase. Layover are also a chance to regroup. Change everyone’s clothes, including your shirt, do this in the middle of the terminal, you have paid your dues with small toilets and who doesn’t love naked baby buns. Eat something. Even though everyone is tired and can now stretch out this is not the time for naps, we have more planes to catch people. Clean all the bottles out so you are ready to start again and repack you carry-on so you know where everything is again.

7. Finally, do not think of your arrival as the end of the journey. Your kids are going to be tired, jetlagged and disoriented by their new surroundings, in other words, they are going to want their mommy! Understand that for the first few days after arrival you may be off the plane, but you are still trapped in a triangle of need, accept it and there will be less hate.

The Idea Guy

My husband is an ADDtrepreneur. This is an entrepreneur with ADD. He is always looking for new ideas and often has several going at a time. Journeys Within, the B&B, JWOC, Nikaya, all of this came from Brandon’s head. Now I’m not saying he makes all of these ideas come to fruition, he is also smart enough to surround himself with hard working people who can take his many ideas and make them happen, but still, the ideas are his. The interesting thing about Brandon is that he has very little ego attached to his ideas. Other people can steal them and call them their own and Brandon just rolls with it. I generally take full credit for the tour company and he never bats an eye! It is actually really fun to be around him because you can always see him appraising things – researching ideas, listening to people talk, keeping an eye out for new projects. Most of our staff, Khmer and Western alike, think he’s crazy, I don’t necessarily disagree entirely, but I also think he’s brilliant, he’s the reason my life is so interesting! Here are some of his projects:

Journeys Within. We now have offices in the US, Bangkok, Cambodia and one coming in Laos, we also have people working for us in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar and it all started when we met a moto driver in Siem Reap 6 years ago whom Brandon wanted to hire.

Journeys Within B&B. I liked this big house and Brandon said, “why don’t we turn it into a B&B, I bet that would cover the rent.” Our team has grown a bit!

A Crocodile Farm. So I didn’t say all his ideas were brilliant! It does make for cool stories though!

JWOC. Brandon started helping a small classroom near our house in Siem Reap. Now, three years later it runs two schools, has installed hundreds of wells, is providing college educations to underprivileged students and has brought many families out of poverty with the micro lending division.

Tire Repair. Really the Michelin Man of Cambodia this deserves its own post. Maybe the best Valentine’s Day present ever, definitely the most creative.

Koh Ker. We are now the proud owners of 22 hectares of farm land in Koh Ker. Brandon is working with a land management NGO to determine the best crops to grow. Most of his ideas I am able to make happen, for this one he’s on his own, I draw the line at farming!

Nikaya. From when we first moved to Cambodia Brandon has talked about marketing some of the beautiful products you can get here to the world. This year he hired a director and we started Nikaya, a fair trade company that will offer Cambodian made products to individuals and retailers in the US. Look from some awesome purses and beautiful home décor coming to our website this summer!

I think there are some smaller projects I am missing, but there are the ones that come to mind. It does mean my life is a bit busy, but, always, always, interesting! I advise anyone bored with life to find themselves an ADDtrepreneur.
